Answer:  There was a change in 9.6.2. some of the Excel export will now require that you actually put .xls or .xlsx in the file name itself.

Question: Why are we receiving the following program error when attempting to export reports to Excel? (Program Error - EXCEL.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program. An error log is being created).

Answer:  It may be due to a limitation within Excel 97 that is causing this program error.

Resolution:  Try running the same report on a system that has a more recent version of Excel. If you do not have a system with a more recent version of Excel loaded, we suggest that you upgrade one of them to a more recent version and try running the same report to see if it resolves the issue.
